He never did explain what was using this old technology in 2036. It sounds like they were about to encounter the Unix date rollover issue in 2038, so needed to recompile the code with a fix. As this computer had a hidden function which wasn't known about there wouldn't have been an emulator for it. But it must have been very important to justify a time traveling journey. I wonder if we'll hear any more from John Titor or time travel devices as we approach 2036. It seems like he was on a different time line to where we are now.
I didn't know about the 2038 rollover - that's interesting. The timelines were off by 10 or 15 years, consistently, I think. We went through a big timeline shift so we may not run into him again. I think about 1/2 of humanity diverged from that spectrum of outcomes, averting the nuclear war he mentioned, to see a more natural exposure/removal of corruption and decentralization of centralized industry.
